Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev have agreed to lift the relationship between their two countries to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, capping delegation level talks in Tashkent held during Modi's two day state visit at the invitation of his Uzbek counterpart, his fourth trip to the Central Asian nation.

The upgrade arrived on a symbolic date, marking fifteen years since India and Uzbekistan first established their strategic partnership. Modi framed the moment as a natural next step for ties he said were maturing alongside both countries' own development goals, linking India's Viksit Bharat vision with Uzbekistan's Yangi Uzbekistan agenda as parallel efforts the two sides want to reinforce through closer cooperation.

Among the most significant outcomes was an agreement on a long term framework for uranium supply, a deal that touches directly on India's civil nuclear energy plans, alongside a shared target of pushing annual bilateral trade to five billion dollars by 2030. The two leaders also discussed expanding cooperation across investment, infrastructure, critical minerals and mining, defence and security, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and health.

Digital connectivity featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides looking at extending India's digital public infrastructure, including UPI, into Uzbekistan as part of a broader push on information technology cooperation. The two governments exchanged several agreements covering mining, culture, education, tourism and Ayurveda, along with a letter of intent for the restoration and conservation of the Buddhist heritage sites of Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa in Uzbekistan.

In a personal gesture underscoring the warmth of the visit, Mirziyoyev conferred Uzbekistan's highest state honour, the Order of Oliy Darajali Dustlik, on Modi, a recognition that came as the two leaders described the newly upgraded partnership as reflecting the trust built over a decade and a half of steadily deepening ties.
