The surge of water and debris destroyed the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, damaged hydropower installations and wiped out long stretches of the only overland road connecting Nepal to Tibet, cutting communication with several communities in the process. More than 5,000 Nepali army and police personnel have been deployed to the disaster zone, with helicopters ferrying in emergency supplies and pulling out survivors from areas that roads can no longer reach. Rescuers have already brought out dozens of stranded foreign nationals from Rasuwa, including 11 Indian citizens along with travellers from the United States, South Korea, Italy, Russia, Bulgaria and Switzerland, even as officials caution that reaching the remaining missing will be slow given how thoroughly the terrain has been cut apart. Officials describe access as the single biggest obstacle facing rescue crews, since the region was difficult to navigate even before the disaster and the collapse of key bridges and roads has left several pockets reachable only by air.
