# Nepal Flood Toll Surges Past 390 as Barrier Lake Breach Raises Fresh Flood Threat

The confirmed death toll from this week's flash floods along the Nepal Tibet border has climbed past 390, with close to 1,500 people still listed as missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region, as authorities warn of a fresh threat from a swollen lake that has now breached its banks near the frontier.

Rasuwa's Chief District Officer Narendra Pariyar said the Nepali Army had informed him that the barrier lake, which formed near the meeting point of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers on the Chinese side of the border, had burst its banks on Friday. Chinese authorities had flagged the lake as high risk a day earlier, estimating its volume at around two million cubic metres and warning that inflow could swell to three million cubic metres by August 30, raising the odds of a breach.

With the blockage now giving way, authorities issued evacuation orders for the Jilong port crossing and stepped up warnings for downstream communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts, the same stretch of the Trishuli river system devastated when Wednesday's glacier collapse first sent floodwater and debris tearing through the region.

Rescue operations have continued at pace even as the new threat emerged. On Thursday alone, helicopters flew 69 sorties to airlift 716 people out of cut off areas, while rescue teams brought a further 756 people out over land routes. The World Health Organization said six health facilities had been damaged in the floods and eight health workers were missing, with at least 466 people injured and receiving treatment at hospitals closer to the disaster zone.

The scale of the disaster and the compounding threat from the barrier lake have turned the response into a race against time, with the Nepali Army running relief camps to treat survivors even as engineers and disaster officials in both Nepal and China monitor the breached lake for signs of a second surge moving downstream toward the very communities still searching for their missing.
