Petrol and diesel across several Indian cities are currently selling cheaper than in Dubai, an unusual flip from the pattern where Gulf fuel has typically undercut Indian pump prices. In Delhi, diesel is priced at around 95.20 rupees a litre, close to 28 rupees cheaper than Dubai's roughly 123.41 rupee per litre equivalent, while Delhi petrol at about 102.12 rupees a litre also comes in below Dubai's Special 95 grade, priced at the equivalent of around 110.04 rupees a litre.
In its own currency, the UAE's Special 95 petrol is priced at 4.28 dirhams a litre and diesel at 4.80 dirhams a litre as of October, after the country's Gasoline and Diesel Prices Follow-up Committee raised rates in its latest monthly review, a process tied to global crude benchmarks rather than held fixed.
The comparison marks a reversal of the usual script, in which Gulf countries including the UAE have generally offered some of the cheapest fuel in the world given their status as oil producers, while India's pump prices carry a heavier load of central and state taxes. The latest figures suggest that gap has narrowed enough, at least for now, to put Indian prices below Dubai's on both fuels in several cities.
Prices in both markets are reviewed on a regular cycle, the UAE monthly and India tracking global crude costs, the rupee's exchange rate and its own tax structure, so the comparison could shift again depending on how each market's next review turns out.
