Rishikanta Singh took silver in the men's 60kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday, finishing on a total of 264kg after two failed clean and jerk attempts cost him the gold.

The Manipuri lifter opened superbly, clearing 121kg in the snatch to equal the Commonwealth Games record and entering the second discipline in the lead. He managed 143kg in the clean and jerk but could not convert his final two attempts, closing on 121 plus 143.

Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan took the title. He matched Rishikanta's 121kg in the snatch, then produced a Games record of 152kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 273kg.

The nine kilogram gap between them came entirely from the second half. Weightlifting rewards two different qualities under one score: the snatch is speed and position, the clean and jerk is strength and composure with a bar already overhead. Leading after the first and losing after the second is among the sport's most common outcomes, and among its most instructive. This is India's second medal of these Games, after Jhandu Kumar's para powerlifting bronze on Friday.
